The Milonga of Exile and Blue Days
The Milonga of Exile and Blue Days reflects on the story of people seeking refuge by following the family of the poet Antonio Machado on their journey to exile. The author uses the poet’s eventual death in exile in the French town of Collioure to attest to facts that are being bloodily repeated. By telling two stories in parallel, the play leads the audience with ease into a game of mirrors, where the Madrid of 1937, besieged by Franco’s troops, can also be contemporary Aleppo, and where the last days of the Machado family can reflect those of any Syrian family trapped at the border.
