Martín, an asthmatic miner who – fortunately – has two months left to live, asks the company doctor to let him live out his one last dream: to hear Carmen at the Paris Opera. The poor man’s life is a mosaic of misfortunes: Antonia, his wife, who gave birth during their wedding, has grown old before her time, suffering with work and with their four children, each with their own struggles: the eldest, Paquito, is on crutches; Elvirita, a deaf-mute, has had to be sent to a special school; Merceditas is too big-hearted, and their youngest’s face is black from playing in the debris from the factory. His brother-in-law is blind in one eye and his eccentric grandmother always has one finger up her nose. A life filled with hardship and disasters, overcome through patience and sacrifice, that have turned his existence into a tale of the grotesque.
