La noticia de su cáncer y su próxima muerte, le empuja a cumplir un sueño largamente añorado: Viajar a Toledo (España), centro neurálgico de la antigua y querida Sefarad y cuna de sus ancestros. La puerta toledana se abre. Una suave voz de mujer le susurra: «Pasa, hija mía. Te estaba esperando. Shabat Shalom». La blanca mano de una anciana enciende la vela del Shabat. Una espléndida menorah, el candelabro de siete brazos, ilumina el recinto en el centro del cual brilla una inmaculada mesa llena de viandas y lujosos cubiertos. Desde el corazón del Shabat, a través del encendido de las 7 velas de la Menorah, que nos conectan con las festividades judías, se establece un flash back encadenado que conduce a nuestra Raquel contemporánea hacia el pasado, recorriendo el territorio mágico de su propia historia de mujer y la de las mujeres de su pueblo.

Synopsis The third in the Medieval Women trilogy. Raquel Toledano, a descendant of Sephardi Jews, is a brilliant university professor living in Toledo, Ohio. The news of her cancer and imminent death pushes her to realise a long-held dream: to travel to Toledo in Spain, to the nerve centre of the ancient, beloved Sepharad and birthplace of her ancestors. The door in Toledo opens. A gentle woman’s voice whispers, ‘Come in, daughter. I’ve been waiting for you. Shabat Shalom.’ The white hand of an old woman lights up the eve of Shabat. A splendid menorah lights up the room, and at its centre an immaculate table piled high with food and luxurious silverware. From the heart of Shabat, through the lighting of the seven candles of the Menorah, connecting us to the Jewish festivals, a flashback begins, leading our contemporary Raquel into the past, travelling through the magical territory of her own history as a woman and of all the women of her people.
